Every school lists a set of values on its website, but not every school embeds these into each aspect of life and learning. Green Shoots does.
Children are great imitators and so the adults in their life must give them something great to imitate. We believe that instilling a sense of purpose and a set of values into the mind of each child who passes through our school is the greatest lifelong lesson we can offer. Exams will dominate then fade, childhood friendships will strengthen then pass, but the values we develop as children will guide our choices and actions throughout our lives. That is why, at Green Shoots, we integrate the importance of a values-led life into every aspect of a child’s learning journey, from the classroom to the dinner table, the sports field to the journey home.
‘Education’ used to be viewed as the accumulation of information, but it is increasingly understood that this approach is no longer fit for purpose. The 21st century does not need people to remember facts they can find online or solve maths problems they can ask their phone to compute. It needs innovators, problem solvers, systems thinkers. To become the leaders of tomorrow, the children of today must be nurtured so that their confidence grows alongside their intellect, their empathy in tandem with their skills, and their spiritual mind with their physical body. At Green Shoots we understand this. To support the growth of tomorrow’s leaders we combine two key ingredients:
Taking inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi, Green Shoots makes teaching and learning decisions based on the idea that we must ‘be the change’ others in education talk about. It is not enough to say that education must change, that it is no longer helpful for children to be filled with facts and examined to test how many they can remember, this change must be lived.
We recognise the importance of preparing children for the exams that some higher education systems still prioritise, but we also innovate to develop the broader educational experiences that more progressive universities and professions are looking for. Starting in the Early Years, where Reggio Emilia pedagogy guides our programme, we ask children to take the lead in their own learning and discover a love for learning that will remain with them for life. Primary-aged children are taught to question, analyse and discuss concepts beyond the written curriculum, and by the time they reach the secondary years, students are exposed to in-house courses that consider broad concepts like sustainable living and equity, as well as the Green Shoots Global Citizenship Certificate.
No two people dream the same, which is why Green Shoots brings together all the different experiences needed to realise the diversity of dreams in our growing community:
Our graduates have gone on to use their excellent exam results to gain entry into world-class universities, their extra curricular skills to impress scholarship committees, and their ‘little bit extra’ to earn internships with dream builders of their choice. We may be a small school in a small town but that has never stopped us from thinking big or encouraging our students to do the same. In the words of Dr Seuss, ‘Oh, the places you’ll go!’
